Falls police search for boy, 16, who fled from crash

NEWTON FALLS -- A 16-year-old Windham boy who was involved in an early-Monday crash in front of 1110 Warren Road in Newton Falls remained at large Tuesday afternoon after fleeing the scene of the crash and then eluding officers who went to a home in Nelson Township Tuesday morning.
The Newton Falls Police Department issued a missing-person alert on its Facebook page late Monday for Matthew J. Bunea, 16. The alert stated that Bunea was last seen on Warren Road near Grant Avenue in Newton Falls and is missing. The post asked for anyone with information on the boy to call 911.
On Tuesday afternoon, the Newton Falls Police Department issued a news release stating that at 6:20 a.m. Monday, Bunea was in a crash at 1110 Warren Road.
His vehicle was traveling south on Warren Road, went off the side of the road and struck a mailbox, then proceeded further down the road where it struck two parked vehicles, pushing them into a utility pole. Alcohol and drugs are suspected contributing factors to the crash, the release states.
Bunea and a passenger fled the scene south on Warren Road with Bunea identified later as the driver. The passenger was a 19-year-old woman. She contacted the Garrettsville Police Department early Tuesday and told the department where Bunea was staying, the release states.
An unknown number of deputies from the Portage County Sheriff's Office and officers from the Garrettsville Police Department responded to the home in Nelson Township.
"When officers arrived, (Bunea) busted out the window and ran from officers," the release states. Bunea "was not located and is still at large," the release states.
