WARREN -- City police are investigating after receiving a report that a man was hit in the head with a hammer.
According to a police report, dispatchers told an officer that the Mercy Health Police Department was on a foot chase for a suspect who hit someone in the head with a hammer on Friday, and after speaking with another officer, learned that the suspect disappeared north of the cancer treatment center.
The officer said the suspect was a white man, wearing a blue shirt with white lettiering on the front, with blue jeans and reddish orange shoes, according to the report.
The officer said he was walking toward the front of the hospital when the victim pointed and yelled, saying that the suspect hit him in the head with a hammer, leading the Mercy Health officer to chase after him.
The report states the reporting officer spoke with the victim, who was sitting in a hospital room with a towel full of blood on his head. He said he and the suspect were at home rolling cigarettes when the suspect assaulted him.
The suspect told the man that he did not know why he did it, with the man adding that he only knew the suspect by his first name, the report states.
The report states the man asked the suspect to ride with him to the hospital in case he passed out. The suspect rode as the passenger.
The report states the man was advised to contact police if the man appears at his house, or if he learns his last name.
A doctor informed the officer that the man sustained a serious laceration to his head and had a brain bleed because of the attack, according to the report.
