WARREN -- In August 1976, during a year when America was celebrating its 200th anniversary, Monica M. Shaker of Warren began her career working for the city.
Shaker has been with the Warren auditor's office for 50 years and was recognized for her service from colleagues and officials with a "Happy Workiversary."
Shaker has worked in the city's finance department as a payroll accountant and has come to be known as the "payroll queen," providing dedication and service through five decades of changing times and various city administrations.
"I love the work I do and enjoy the staff I work with and the people I have met and known over the years. I have great coworkers,'' Shaker said of why she enjoys her job.
She began her career on Aug. 9, 1976, as a clerk/ typist, and then an accountant and is now general accountant in the payroll department.
Auditor Vincent Flask said he has benefited from all of Shaker's knowledge of the finance department since he began working there. He said Shaker is the employee with the most years in the city.
Shaker said she does plan to one day retire from the job, but has not made a decision about when.
She said she will help prepare the new employees who come into the finance department when members of the current six-member staff begin to retire.
In a proclamation from Mayor Doug Franklin, he describes Shaker as the definition of "an essential employee advocate."
Her unmatched work ethic, loyalty, knowledge, and genuine concern for others have made her a rare and deeply respected member of the city family."
Franklin said that Shaker's dedication is so legendary that on occasion one might receive a call from the fire department asking whether they should come to city hall and put out a fire or if it is Shaker simply burning the toast again.
Franklin in his proclamation said that behind Shaker's confidence, style and unmistakable personality is a woman dedicated to her family, colleagues and the city of Warren.
"Monica is known throughout the city for her big heart, even bigger personality, and uncanny ability to make people feel welcome. She is always ready to offer a snack, a hug, a helping hand, or perhaps a little advice, whether you asked for it or not. And if you happen to be in the building, you will probably know Monica is there before you ever see her, because you will hear her first," Franklin said in the proclamation.
