VIENNA -- With fire officials needing updated technology, trustees are looking at whether laptops or desktops could be the more feasible option moving forward.
During the workshop portion of Monday's regular meeting, Trustee Kim Ellis reported that the fire department is looking to purchase new desktop computers because the ones they have are going out of date.
Ellis said two devices are needed -- one for fire Chief Gus Birch's office and the other serving for EMS reporting.
Ellis said they have not obtained quotes for the devices.
Trustee Phil Pegg noted that a state purchasing agreement would be one means to obtain them, but questioned whether it would be cheaper for officials to purchase two laptops instead -- considering technological advancements in recent years.
"The memory nowadays, the memory on a laptop's higher than your old PCs, and that's what you need for speed," Pegg said. "They would work faster for them, too."
Pegg suggested that they find out the difference between the two devices and get quotes for both via a state purchasing agreement, adding that they could probably beat the cost.
Pegg noted the township had 14 to 15 laptops in the past, acknowledging that police Chief Dan Adkins is working on a grant to obtain laptops for the police department.
SAFETY DAY
National Night Out is returning to the township, but in a different capacity, according to Trustee Mike Haddle.
Haddle said he spoke with Adkins, and officials are hoping to host Safety Day noon to 3 p.m. Sept. 19 at Vienna Bicentennial Park.
"We missed National Night Out -- we weren't ready to have anything yet, so we think Sept. 19, we can do a Safety Day thing," Haddle said. "It would just be a good way to get out there -- Chief Adkins said he'll take the reins on it, and arrange a lot of stuff."
Stephanie Garito, the township's administrative assistant, said the Vienna Neighborhood Watch Group previously organized the event, which hasn't been in the township for the last several years.
Haddle said Fiscal Officer Heidi Brown has spoken about having a paper shredding company attend to shred sensitive documents, and Garito said officials will have locks to pass out to residents for gun, medicine and alcohol cabinets.
