A standoff between law enforcement and a fugitive concluded Wednesday with the man committing suicide.
According to an email from the U.S. Marshals Northern District of Ohio office, the agency's violent fugitive task force received information that the man who has been on the run since 2022 was hiding in a house in the 3900 block of Highlawn Avenue SW, Howland.
The subject was noted to have an extensive violent criminal history and was wanted by the Mahoning County Sheriff's Office on charges of attempted murder, felonious assault and aggravated burglary.
The representative said task force members saw the subject leave the residence and flee to a wooded area behind the property, adding officers heard a single gunshot from an area that they went to.
Officers moved to the location and found him dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the representative, who added that authorities are actively working on identifying the man's next of kin before releasing his identity.
The task force was aided by Howland Township, Weathersfield Township and Niles police departments, Mahoning Valley Crisis Response Team and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
Residents in some areas of the township were asked to shelter or evacuate, and law enforcement shut down or requested certain roads be avoided.
Howland Police Chief Nick Roberts said the department worked with the marshals to establish and maintain a secure perimeter around the location throughout the 45-minute standoff, noting their primary objective was ensuring residents' safety in the surrounding area and helping with evacuation or shelter measures.
