Cover Down Fund reveals joint initiative

By Staff report 2 min read

WARREN -- Local veterans will have the opportunity to access fresh and healthy food, thanks to an initiative between a local veterans nonprofit and a local farmers market.

The Cover Down Fund announced the launch of the Warren Farmers Market Initiative, which aims to support veterans while supporting the farmers market and its local vendors.

A news release states the initiative, which starts Friday, will begin with a $1,500 pilot grant with the potential to expand based on the community's participation, donor support and the program's overall success.

Every eligible veteran who attends the market on Friday will receive a $20 voucher that can be redeemed with participating vendors at the market. The vouchers will be distributed at the Warren Farmers Market's information tent while funding is available.

Veterans must present a valid Ohio County Veterans identification, a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Health Care or U.S. Military identification card, or a state driver's license or state ID displaying the Armed Forces Veteran designation to receive a voucher.

The vouchers are limited to one per veteran on a first-come, first serve basis, until available funding is exhausted.

Herm Breuer, the Cover Down Fund's founder and president, said the organization wants to encourage veterans to come downtown and enjoy the Warren Farmers Market, while also supporting local farmers and small businesses and taking fresh food home for themselves and families.

"This initiative reflects our belief that serving veterans extends beyond benefits -- it also means investing in their health, well-being and quality of life," Breuer said. "If this pilot program is successful, we hope to grow it into an annual tradition that serves even more veterans throughout the Mahoning Valley."

The Cover Down Fund extends its sincere appreciation to the Warren Farmers Market, its participating vendors and the supporters who made the pilot initiative possible.

Following Friday's launch, the program will be evaluated to measure participation and community impact. The results will help determine future funding opportunities and potential expansion of the initiative.
