WARREN -- Three people were sentenced to various prison terms in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court last week for various crimes. They include:
• Xavier T. Arrington, 20, of Wood Avenue, Niles, who received a 21-month prison sentence, including a one-year mandatory term for a firearm specification, after pleading guilty in May to a third-degree felony of discharge of a firearm on/near prohibited premises.
Arrington was credited by Judge Sean O'Brien for already serving 172 days in jail. He originally also was charged with having weapons under disability and inducing panic.
According to a police report, Niles police Chief Jay Holland said the police department received numerous reports of gunshots being fired in the South Cedar Street area. When police arrived at 28 Wood Ave., they heard more gunshots and a woman screaming.
The report states that a man, later identified as Arrington, was spotted carrying a rifle on Wood Avenue and then was seen running into the apartment building. The standoff began when the occupants of the apartment refused to answer the door.
The Niles Special Response Team was activated, and a search warrant was obtained with the assistance of the Trumbull County Prosecutor's Office.
Multiple attempts to make contact with the occupants were unsuccessful. The suspect’s mother was contacted by the SRT negotiator and she came to the scene. A woman who lived in the apartment eventually came out and surrendered to the SRT team. She was interviewed and released with no charges, Holland said.
A drone was eventually deployed and phone contact was made with the primary suspect. Arrington peacefully surrendered after several hours and was taken into custody.
The report states that when executing the search warrant, detectives found a loaded AR-15 rifle and multiple spent shell casings at the scene. The release states that it appeared Arrington was intoxicated and he exited the apartment and began to shoot at random after a domestic disturbance.
• Kimara McKinney, 21, of Campbell, was given a 90-day jail sentence as well as three years of probation after pleading guilty in July to misdemeanor charges of theft, assault and obstructing official business and third-degree intimidation and fifth-degree identity fraud felonies.
The case involved a July 23, 2025, incident at Subway in Brookfield where McKinney attacked two employees of the store after she was told she couldn't use the restroom. McKinney was also charged with taking a cellphone from an employee. O'Brien said McKinney was not sent to prison because she had no prior criminal record.
• Krystal Hewis, 41, of West Farmington, was sentenced by Judge Sarah Kovoor to 36 months in prison after she pleaded guilty in June to one count each of attempted felonious assault, domestic violence, assault on a peace officer, assault on a correction officer and resisting arrest. The case involved Trumbull County Sheriff deputies responding to a domestic incident Jan. 30 at Hewis’ home. The sheriff’s office report states Hewis assaulted her live-in boyfriend with a frying pan.
Hewis also assaulted a deputy and struck a corrections officer as she was taken to jail. The victim was in court prior to sentencing and showed the judge the wound the frying pan made when it struck his arm.
