CORTLAND -- City Council has taken the first step toward adopting an updated official zoning map, giving the measure its first reading Monday.
The map was last updated in 2016 and already has been reviewed and approved by the city Planning, Zoning and Building Commission. Council hosted a public hearing on the proposed map immediately before its regular meeting, but no residents spoke for or against the changes.
"It's just updating since 2016," city Service Director Greg Solarz said. He said the planning and zoning commission has reviewed the map and "it's good to go."
Also at the meeting, council:
• Saw William Scott Bower sworn in as a fire captain. Bower, a fourth-generation firefighter, joined the Cortland Fire Department as a part-time firefighter in 2015 and became full time in 2019.
• Approved a resolution allowing the fire chief to sign a memorandum of understanding with the Ohio Department of Medicaid as part of an ongoing effort to recoup funding.
• Heard about the results of a recent tornado siren test. Two working tornado sirens provide coverage throughout the city. A third siren is not working.
• Heard that work has begun on the outdoor event space on West Main Street. The contractor has until December to complete the project.
• Heard from a resident on Corey Gale Drive, who made a complaint about storm sewer drainage affecting his property.
