Bristol approves pay increase for firefighters

By BOB COUPLAND 2 min read

BRISTOL -- Township Trustees, wanting to attract and keep members for the township fire department, approved pay increases for employees on Tuesday.

Trustees approved $2 pay increases for part-time firefighters/emergency medical technicians from $14 to $16 per hour and part-time firefighter/medic from $16 to $18 per hour.

Trustees Chairman Doug Seemann said trustees also agreed to bring back longevity pay providing 5 cents per year for every year served for active roster members.

He said based on the current active roster members the longevity pay will be 15 cents every three years for those who put in 750 hours per year.

Employees will also receive a $150 per year uniform allowance if working 750 hours per year.

Seemann said for holiday pay it will go from the current double-time pay to time-and-and-half.

Trustees also approved having one full-time firefighter/medic with pay between $45,000 and $50,000 per year based on experience.

Trustees met briefly in executive session on the pay increases.

DATA CENTERS

At a previous meeting trustees had asked the zoning commission to consider recommendations on data centers for the township zoning book.

Zoning board member Ken Weeks said it is important that officials look at data centers and have something on the books like many other communities do.

Seemann said the trustees had previously asked the zoning board to look into data centers.

Trustee Rhonda Snyder said she did research and after speaking with Meeks what was being considered for the township zoning was information on larger communities and municipalities such as Howland and Liberty.

"There are issues and items pertaining to data centers that are for larger communities and not a smaller township like Bristol with these items having no bearing on the township,'' Snyder said.

She said she plans to get new information on data centers for the next meeting September 1.

In other action, trustees:

• Are seeking a $5,000 grant for the cemeteries.

• Approved proceeding with repairing and replacing an 18-inch culvert on Housel Craft Road West of Route 45 at $4,000 and to repair and replace a 72-inch diameter culvert and head wall on Corey Hunt Road north of Route 88 at $20,000. Officials said the county is preparing a timeline for replacement of a double culvert on Housel Craft Road.

• Approved Best Furnace at $890 for yearly maintenance agreement which would include various township buildings, including the old township hall, Congregational Church building and maintenance garage.

• Approved proceeding with the resurfacing of half of Oakfield North Road with bids being sought.
