YOUNGSTOWN -- A 6-year-old boy died after being found shot inside a home in the 500 block of Plum Street on the near West Side Monday afternoon.
The Youngstown Police Department issued a press release Tuesday morning stating that police were called to the home at 4:09 p.m. for a shooting.
When they arrived, they found the boy shot inside a bedroom and began life-saving measures until paramedics arrived.
The child was transported to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, the release states.
Youngstown police detectives and its crime scene unit were called to the scene to begin an investigation. Plum Street is on the west side of Oak Hill Cemetery.
The press release did not say how the boy was shot, but it did "urge gun owners to safely and responsibly store their firearms and other weapons." It stated that the police department "will be having a discussion with the public related to that in the near future."
The release added that "The safety and security of our children is of utmost importance to the Police Department and City of Youngstown."
The release states that the Youngstown Police Department and Mahoning County Coroner's Office are investigating the incident and ask the public to call Crime Stoppers at 330-746-2583 or 330-746-8973 with any information or tips they may have about the incident. Tips can be left anonymously.
