Welcome to Weaver Way

Champion names road in honor of recently retired softball coach

CHAMPION — Girls softball coach Cheryl Weaver will be remembered for years to come as the six-time state champion coach had a road name for her called “Weaver Way.”

The Champion Board of Education at its meeting Monday voted to name the road that leads to the softball field in honor of Weaver. The road is located between the softball field and the football stadium east of the school complex.

Weaver was praised by the board members and school officials for her years of service as well as accomplishments and distinguished career as a coach to Champion schools.

Weaver served as a softball coach for 27 years, with an overall record of 559-136-3.

Her accomplishments included six Ohio High School Athletic Association state championships, one state runner-up, an additional state final four appearance, 19 league championships, 22 sectional championships, 14 district championships and eight regional championships.

Board members said Weaver has shown extraordinary dedication and leadership and will have a lasting impact on Champion schools and its student athletes.

Board President David Mahan said “Cheryl has been an amazing asset to our school district and our girls softball program. It is the closure of a chapter in Champion schools. She will be missed.”

Mahan said whoever replaces Weaver as softball coach will have big shoes to fill. He said whoever is named coach will do well following Weaver as an example.

Mahan said he is excited to see the sign “Weaver Way” to go up to honor Weaver.

“Cheryl deserves this honor. I have known Cheryl for many years. She is an amazing and winning coach as her record states,” he said.

Weaver said Champion schools, the administration, students and community have been wonderful to her in her years as a coach.

She said to get to state competition eight times and win six is something she will always remember.

Weaver’s 559 career wins put her in the top 15 all-time in the state of Ohio, and those six state titles are the second most by any head coach ever.

Weaver led the softball teams to state competitions in 2011, 2012, 2015, 2017, 2018, and 2019, making her the second-most successful head coach in state history in terms of state titles.

Weaver has been inducted into the Trumbull County Sports Hall of Fame, Champion High School Hall of Fame, Ohio High School Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association Hall of Fame and Curbstone Coaches Hall of Fame.

She has been recognized with 18 Trumbull County Coach of the Year awards and multiple district and state Coach of the Year honors.

Starting at $3.85/week.
