With reports of many trees down and roof damage to some homes in Liberty and Hubbard townships, officials from the National Weather Service in Cleveland are to be in parts of the Mahoning Valley today to determine the severity of a tornado that passed through the area.
Trumbull County Emergency Management Director John Hickey said he received calls of many trees down and one house having roof damage in Hubbard Township. Residents reported a funnel cloud in the area of Applegate Drive on the Liberty-Hubbard line.
Hickey said the NWS will survey that area and others to determine the severity of the storm, and there has been no report of injuries.
The NWS issued a tornado warning Tuesday evening for southeastern Trumbull County that included Liberty and Hubbard. Sirens began blaring just after 6:30 p.m. Warnings also were issued for parts of Western Pennsylvania.
Hubbard Mayor Ben Kyle said he spoke with city safety officials, and there was no reported damage in the city. He said he spoke with Hickey, who reported trees down in the Youngstown Hubbard Road area of Hubbard Township.
A 911 spokeswoman said residents called about seeing possible funnel clouds in the sky and reports of trees and powerlines down in a section of Brookfield, Hubbard and Liberty.
Reports state a funnel cloud was seen in northern Youngstown in the area of McGuffey and State Line roads, which is near the Hubbard Township border.
The area experienced heavy rain, with reports of more than 5,200 customers as of early Tuesday evening in the Youngstown and Boardman areas without power.
It is the second tornado in the area this month after one went through Canfield Township on July 5, followed by a macroburst that also affected parts of Boardman.
