BAZETTA -- Fire and gas company crews were out Wednesday afternoon along a section of state Route 46 in the township after a gas line was hit and was spewing gas.
The Bazetta Fire Department posted on its website that Route 46 between McCleary-Jacoby and Cadwallader Sonk roads was closed for a few hours. A spokesman for the fire department said two businesses and about a dozen homes in the area of state Route 46 and Westview Drive were evacuated as a safety precaution.
Fire Chief Tom Rink said after the gas line was shut off, residents and business owners were able to return. A report states that a company installing fiber optics was working in the area when the natural gas line was hit.
On Monday in Cortland, residents were evacuated in the area of Greenbriar Drive and Wae Trail after a gas leak on a main line in that area.
Similar incidents have happened in Girard and Howland since the beginning of the year, with a house explosion resulting from the leak in Girard.
