CHAMPION -- The Board of Education has approved merging the assistant principal for grades K-8 and the technology director positions into a new job description that officials said will save more than $120,000.
The board on Monday approved Joseph Tredent, who has been serving as technology director, as the new assistant principal/technology director on a 216-day, three-year contract at $109,000 annually.
Superintendent John Grabowski said Tredent has an administrative license and can serve in both positions.
"He is excited to get started. He already has built a relationship as technology director with the principals, teachers and other staff. They look forward to working with him," Grabowski said.
He said Tredent also has taught internet safety to students in computer classes. He said with the move, other staff will handle additional administrative roles and one administrative position will be eliminated.
Tredent is replacing Austin Handrych, who accepted a position with Rocky River schools. He was assistant principal in Champion for eight years.
Treasurer Laurena Rouan said the savings by combining the two positions and eliminating an administrative position is $121,550.
Also hired was Nicholas Komara as an elementary music teacher on a one-year contract, replacing Katie Ahmed, who resigned effective June 30. Grabowski said Komara did his student teaching in the district.
The board also accepted the retirement resignation of John Shumaker, who was the bus mechanic in the district for 20 years. Officials said he will work until Nov. 1 to assist the person replacing him with learning the job.
Grabowski said Shumaker has helped this summer getting buses and other vehicles ready for the school year. Board members said they wanted to have new staff in place for the start of the new school year, which begins Aug. 19.
In other business, the board heard from Grabowski that a recent car show fundraiser at the high school parking lot generated $8,500 to benefit the school district's athletic programs and the local booster clubs. Plans are to host the car show annually.
