HOWLAND -- Alex Cornicelli has been appointed to fill an opening on the Howland Park Board with the recent death of Allen Seman, who served for several years.
Cornicelli was appointed recently by Trumbull County Probate Judge James Fredericka and will serve through December 2027.
"I have always been a resident of Howland Township and played a variety of different sports here at the park. I am currently an assistant park manager at Pymatuning State Park working for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. I saw this opening and some people told me I would be great as a park commissioner,'' Cornicelli said.
He said he hopes he will be able to give back to the community and do what he can to make the parks a place for all residents to enjoy.
"I want to give children the same opportunities I had riding my bike to the park and having many different things to do here. I want to give back to this community that gave me so much," Cornicelli said.
He said his grandfather, Michael Cornicelli, was one of the original members of the township park and later served on the township zoning commission.
"He was one of the founding members of the park board," Cornicelli said.
Other earlier park board members were Richard Orwig and Warner Taiclet.
The board has decided to honor Seman and will have a bench dedicated in his memory at the main township park.
The bench will be placed by the township park office building where the meetings take place.
Donations in Seman's memory will cover the cost for the bench and his name on it.
Park Board President Shawn Pompelia said many park patrons have reached out asking how they can honor Seman's memory. Pompelia said a decision was made to have a memorial bench in his honor.
In other business, board member Jim Fogarty said fencing has been completed around Tiger Town II, which is a large play area near the main entrance of the park. The $30,000 in funds and materials for the fencing were provided by Logan's Landing, which helps provide park activities for children of all abilities and disabilities.
Fogarty said speed limit signs of 15 mph were posted throughout the township park for safety reasons. He said they also are encouraging walkers to yield to motor vehicles traveling through the park.
In other business, the board:
• Is addressing vandalism at the tennis court that included damage to the nets and the equipment that tightens them.
• Will have five concerts continuing Sunday evenings in August at the township park. Concerts run through Aug. 30. There is a special concert Aug. 14 featuring the Howland High School band.
• Had drainage work and the small bridge worked on by Southside Drainage on the north side of the park.
• Reported a local Scout completed a book donation box at the park where people can take a book and leave a book for someone else. It is located by the cupola.
