Warren man accused of assaulting officer
WARREN — A Warren man remains held without bond after being accused of physically assaulting an officer.
Steven Carnahan, 52, pleaded not guilty to a charge of felonious assault and domestic violence in front of Warren Municipal Court Judge Natasha Natale Thursday.
According to a police report, Warren officers were called to a Hazelwood Avenue residence Wednesday for a man threatening to jump out a window, with dispatchers noting he was intoxicated and had threatened to go after the caller if she called police.
The woman opened the door for an officer, who made entry and found the man, later identified as Carnahan, standing in the dining room area shirtless and visibly intoxicated. The report states that a small girl approached one of the officers and said Carnahan had been drinking and had weapons.
The report states Carnahan put his right hand into his front pants pocket and the officer noticed an object appearing to be a knife, which Carnahan began pulling out — leading the officer to draw his service weapon and point it at him with orders to stop.
The report states Carnahan took a fighting stance and attacked one of the officers, taking them to the ground as the reporting officer deployed a taser at Carnahan’s back, which did not affect him, but the officer deployed it a second time to the same effect.
The taser probe stuck in Carnahan’s back was used for a dry stun, which also had no effect, the report states.
The officer punched Carnahan four to five times in his left shoulder area, successfully pulling his left hand behind his back and cuffing him, but having to punch several more times to finish doing so, the report states.
Court records show Carnahan is to be held without bond because the information available establishes the presumption that he committed the offense, and that he poses a substantial risk of serious physical harm to any person or the community, which no release conditions would ensure the safety of.
Carnahan is set to return to court Tuesday, court records show.
