Warrant issued for Girard man accused of threatening partner

LIBERTY — A temporary warrant was issued Monday for a Girard man accused of threatening to kill his significant other and two juvenile children.

John Newman, 56, faces a charge of domestic violence in Girard Municipal Court.

According to a police report, officers were called to a Churchill Road residence in reference to a domestic, and dispatchers said the caller alleged that her significant other was threatening her and was highly intoxicated. Dispatchers also noted there were multiple firearms in the residence.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers immediately evacuated the woman, along with a juvenile girl and boy, who was also contacted inside the residence and complied with orders to exit safely.

The woman told officers that the altercation began after Newman wrecked the couple’s vehicle in the driveway while allegedly intoxicated and became irate, causing an argument, the report states.

The woman told officers Newman threatened to kill her. She said he wanted “everyone to die,” adding that he hit her over and over again in the chest and leg area, the report states, adding that Newman was in the basement area where the firearms are located.

Officers attempted to contact Newman via telephone, but he did not respond after several attempts, and after officers requested assistance from the Girard Police Department.

The juvenile boy reported hearing a loud argument regarding the vehicle crash, but told officers he did not witness any physical violence or threats involving weapons. The girl reiterated what the woman said about the car crashing in the driveway, noting that Newman entered the residence with a bottle of vodka and a case of beer, the report states.

The girl said Newman allegedly became upset when he couldn’t locate his car keys, yelling at the women and juvenile children and pushing the woman, despite being able to walk past her unobstructed.

The girl said Newman did threaten to kill the trio, but noted no firearm was retrieved or directly involved, the report states.

The report states that the woman indicated she wished to pursue criminal charges, but because she did not have her eyeglasses at the scene, she was unable to complete a formal written statement at that time.
