Howland seeks applicants for vacant park board seat
Board tells interested residents to contact judge’s office
HOWLAND — The township park board is seeking interest from residents who want to fill a vacancy on the board with the recent death of board member Allen Seman.
Park Board President Shawn Pompelia said anyone interested can contact Judge James Fredericka’s office at the Warren Municipal Court. Fredericka will make the decision on who will fill the open seat.
The park board meets once a month to decide issues relating to the township parks
Pompelia noted the parks have received $1,080 in contributions in honor of Seman. He said plans are to plant a tree and install a park bench in Seman’s memory.
Donations can be sent to Howland Township Park, P.O. Box 8528, Warren, OH 44484.
TIGER TOWN UPGRADE
Park Board member Jim Fogarty said the park and Logan’s Landing, a local nonprofit supporting sensory-aware, inclusive spaces, are planning a playground accessibility project upgrade at Tiger Town.
Fofart says the $30,000 capital improvement initiative shepherded and funded entirely by Logan’s Landing will include new protective safety fencing around the playground, upgraded accessible playground equipment and new signage for the playground.
“The Howland Parks project is our biggest venture to date. Children of all abilities deserve to be included, and we’re proud to make our vision a reality with the support of the community and Howland Parks,” said Carrie Biery, who founded Logan’s Landing on behalf of her son Logan, who is autistic and nonverbal.
“We’re committed to continuing our mission of improving Howland Park, and if we can make it safer for children and easier for parents, that’s a big win for everyone involved.”
Completion of the Logan’s Landing project is expected by mid-summer.
Various projects have been done at the park this year.
Pompelia said a rubber surface was placed under Tiger Town by Fiber at $36,000.
He said the township also contributed $5,700 for materials and the labor for the replacement of a culvert off Clifton Drive near the township park.
Pompelia said Southside Excavating did work and sand installation for volleyball with a donation of $1,800.
He said the Trumbull Tennis Association donated to the park for windscreens for the pickleball courts at Bolindale Park, which help prevent wind from affecting the movement of the balls in pickleball.
In other business, the board:
• Announced the summer concerts are at 6 p.m. on various Sundays at the township park through August.
• Reported the township had a clean audit for 2024-25.
