Brookfield nursing home evacuated because of fire
BROOKFIELD — The Brookfield Fire Department helped evacuate about 80 people from a nursing facility in Masury on Monday afternoon after a fire alarm call.
According to the fire department’s social media site, the department received a call about 4:20 p.m. of smoke and fire and a possible explosion in the facility’s oxygen storage room at Addison Healthcare Center. Fire crews were able to get the fire out quickly.
The social media post states that the sprinkler system inside the building was activated. The fire was contained to one room.
Assisting Brookfield were the Sharon City Fire Department and the Hubbard Eagle Joint Fire District.
Several ambulances were at the scene to check residents for any injuries, but none were reported. EMS crews assisted with getting patients back inside the building.
The post states fire damage was minimal and it was determined that no oxygen explosion was involved. The report states there was more water damage than fire damage to the storage room.
The state fire marshal is investigating the cause.
