Trumbull approves funding to improve cybersecurity in county
WARREN — The Trumbull County commissioners approved two resolutions providing a total of $214,429.40 for programs over a three-year period to improve cybersecurity in the county.
“We are constantly updating our cybersecurity,” Commissioner Denny Malloy stated after Wednesday’s meeting. “We are spending whatever it takes to make sure the county is as protected as it can be.”
During a Thursday morning meeting, Malloy noted the county is following recommendations from professionals to both monitor and protect county departments from cyber threats.
“We have a team in our IT department that monitors them daily,” Malloy said. “Whenever they see something new, they are on it immediately. They have not been afraid to ask for funding needed for preventative measures. We have funded everything they have asked for.”
The Ohio House passed HB 96, which became effective last September, that requires all counties, cities and townships in Ohio to create a cybersecurity program to guard against hackers and dangerous ransomware attacks.
The law is designed to keep the county’s data safe and secure, Trumbull County Auditor Martha Yoder told the commissioners during a September 2025 meeting.
House Bill 92 requires counties to report any cyber incidents to the state and to have secure backups of their data to avoid paying ransoms. The cybersecurity program itself will not be shared with the public.
One of the biggest requirements of HB 96 is that all county employees who use computers must complete cybersecurity training.
Also during the meeting, the commissioners approved spending $4,045.59 to purchase one of two UKG Intouch DX G2, B/C time clocks for the Trumbull County Family Court, 220 Main St., Warren. Court officials will pay for the second time clock.
In other business, the commissioners:
• Approved a $34,870 purchase of a Kantech Unified Door/Key Fob Entry System for the Trumbull County Emergency Management Agency’s new location, 773 Everett Hull Road, Cortland. The system is being purchased from Sage Integration Company in Warren.
• Approved the 2026-2027 Traffic Signal Maintenance Contract with Main Lite Electric Co. Inc. for an additional 12 months for $51,600. The contract will end July 6, 2027.
• Awarded Foust Construction Inc. of Girard a $200,112.75 contract for Phase 5 of the Trumbull-Kinsman sidewalks project. Eighty percent will be paid for using funding from the Transportation Alternatives Program obtained through Eastgate Regional Council of Governments. Kinsman Township will pay for the remaining 20%.
• Adopted a resolution naming June as Elder Abuse Awareness Month in Trumbull County.
