Seman remembered as ‘mayor of Howland parks’
HOWLAND — Allen Seman dedicated his time to making sure the Howland Township parks had what they needed, serving for more than 10 years as a member of the park commission.
Seman, 77, died earlier this month.
Shawn Pompelia, a park commission member, said he served the past nine years with Seman on the park board.
“He was in his 11th year. With Al, the community always came first. He was always willing to do what he could to help the youth of the community,” Pompelia said.
He said Seman could always be seen driving his car around Howland Township Park and the other parks, making sure everything was okay.
“He was like the mayor of Howland parks. He would drive around the park three or four times a day checking on what needed to be improved,” Pompelia said.
Seman has a degree in engineering that he used for making sure projects at the parks were done correctly.
“Al had the expertise and would share his advice and opinions on work being done at the park,” Pompelia said.
Seman also was active in the community, showing dedication to the youth by serving as a coach for youth baseball, basketball and soccer and organizing soccer referee clinics and basketball clinics.
Jessica Gault, who also served as park commissioner with Seman, said many people did not realize all that he did behind the scenes to make the parks the best for everyone.
“Al truly loved the parks. He would spend many hours at the parks. He loved this community and did what he could to make the parks the best they could be,” Gault said.
She said Seman was a soccer coach for 20 years and served the community in so many ways.
“Al will be missed,” Gault said.
Vivian McDowell, who served as the park commission fiscal officer, said Seman was a very caring and sincere member of the community who put the needs of the youth first.
“He really loved the Howland community and would be the first to step up and help however and wherever he could. He dedicated his time to this community. He was a great person to work with,” she said
