Police share more details on Friday shooting
WARREN — The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is continuing to investigate an officer-related shooting, but more details have been made available.
According to a news release from the Warren Police Department, officers were called to the 1100 block of South Street SE in reference to someone in a car waving a gun at the caller.
The release states officers located the suspect vehicle and attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but the driver refused to stop — heading down several streets and coming to a stop at the dead end of Charles Avenue SE.
One of the suspect vehicle’s occupants brought out a gun and fired at officers, and officers returned fire, according to the release.
After a brief foot chase, an unidentified suspect was taken into custody and transported to St. Joseph Warren Hospital for treatment, and the vehicle’s driver was also taken into custody.
The release states that anyone with information regarding the incident is encouraged to contact Detective John Greaver at 330-841-2723.
The shooting, which happened in a dead-end corner of Charles Avenue SE, left that portion of the road blocked off with crime scene tape. Warren Police Capt. Robert Massucci said Friday that no officers were injured and two people were transported to the hospital, but he refused to answer any more questions.
A resident whose house bordered the crime scene and had tape wrapped around one of his trees said the incident started around 11:30 a.m.
SECOND OFFICER-RELATED SHOOTING
It’s the second officer-related shooting in Trumbull County this year, with the first one happening in Howland in mid-February.
That shooting, which occurred in front of the former Wahaka Taco restaurant and across from the township fire and police stations on Niles Cortland Road NE, left a man wounded and a portion of the road closed between East Market and High streets for several hours.
A news release from the department confirmed no officers were injured, adding that BCI was conducting an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
