Hubbard man accused of strangling daughter

GIRARD — A Hubbard Township man is set to appear back in court Thursday after being accused of strangling his daughter during an argument over the weekend.

Jeffery Canzonetta, 56, pleaded not guilty to two charges of domestic violence in Girard Municipal Court on Monday. He had an initial appearance on a strangulation charge, which is a felony.

According to a police report, Trumbull County Sheriff’s deputies were called to a Warner Road residence Saturday for a domestic call, with dispatchers saying the caller needed to see an officer regarding her father “acting crazy” and pushing her and her mother.

Deputies met with the caller and her mother, and the mother said she woke up to yelling and screaming in the home with Canzonetta and her daughter.

The mother said she saw yelling and pushing in the hallway, and when she tried to intervene, Canzonetta got in her face and wanted to hit her, immediately pushing her to the floor, according to the report.

The report states the mother witnessed Canzonetta putting his hands around her daughter’s throat and squeezing.

Deputies spoke with the daughter, who said Canzonetta, casually walked into her room and commented on her room being a mess after saying hello and made other negative statements. The report states the discussion got very heated, and the daughter told deputies she tried calming the situation, telling Canzonetta to get out of her room as he got closer to her.

The report states that Canzonetta pushed her against the wall and squeezed her throat to a point where she couldn’t breathe.

Deputies contacted Hubbard City police to try and locate Canzonetta at his place of employment, the Eagle Grille & Tavern, where he was detained by Hubbard police and arrested by a sheriff’s deputy.

Canzonetta was released on bond as of Monday, according to the Trumbull County Sheriff’s Office website.
