Diocese names new interim president at Ursuline

YOUNGSTOWN — Sister Mary McCormick has been appointed by Bishop David Bonnar of the Youngstown Diocese as the new interim president of Ursuline High School, effective July 1.

“I am humbled to be appointed by Bishop Bonnar as interim President of Ursuline High School,” said McCormick, the 21st General Superior of the Ursuline Sisters. “In 1905, the Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown founded the Ursuline Academy, an all-girls high school at the Rayen Avenue Convent. By 1930, the coed Ursuline High School was located on Bryson St.

“I am honored to continue the legacy of Ursuline Sisters, priests, and laity who have been integral to the strong heritage of the school, and to work with the current administration, faculty, and staff to further the mission of the school.”

On her appointment as Interim president, Bonnar said: “I am very grateful to Sister Mary McCormick for accepting this charge to be Interim President of Ursuline High School in this time of transition. As a woman religious and superior of the Ursuline Sisters, Sister is a holy woman devoted to the charism and mission that the High School embodies. Sister Mary is a born leader who has humbly, faithfully and effectively served the Church.”

McCormick is a professor of systematic theology for St. Mary’s Seminary and Graduate School of Theology in Cleveland, where she has served since 1997.

McCormick holds a doctorate in systematic theology from Fordham University, Bronx, N.Y.; a master of arts in religious education from Loyola University, New Orleans; a master of arts in theology from Duquesne University; and a bachelor of science degree in education from Youngstown State University.

McCormick was also an instructor at St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Louisville and Ursuline High School.

She is an Austintown native and a graduate of Ursuline High School.
