Butler names new director

HOWLAND — As the school year wraps up, transportation looks to be trending positively in the district.

As part of his report at Wednesday’s Howland Board of Education meeting, Superintendent Kevin Spicher said school officials are “very excited” about the direction they’re heading with their transportation supervisor.

Spicher was referring to Charles Mendenhall, who started on the job May 1 after the board approved a pair of supervisory contracts for him at a March meeting.

“There’s the new app that’s going to be coming; we’ll be announcing it as soon as possible once we have it up and going, it’s basically called a stop finder,” Spicher said. “That app will be something where the parents won’t necessarily be able to track every move of the bus, but what they can do is set reminders, and it’ll tell them when that bus is within a certain distance from their child’s bus stop.”

Spicher said the app sends out a notification the moment the bus reaches a certain GPS coordinate set by the parent.

Spicher said the app has other features that will be rolled out too, but school officials will share more information later in the summer, so everyone knows about the app and how to operate it.

Spicher said the application is an extension of Transfinder, replacing Versatrans, which he said was no longer operating well.

“We’re still working with Transfinder right now, as part of the packages, to let us know where the efficiencies can be improved,” Spicher said.

Starting at $3.23/week.
