McDonald puts safety services levy on November ballot

McDONALD — Wanting to provide enough funds for the fire and police departments for operations, village council on Wednesday gave final reading to placing a 4.5-mill, five-year safety services levy on the November ballot.

Officials said the levy will generate $310,000 annually for fire and police services and other needs for day-to-day operations.

Fire and police officials have said at past meetings of the need for additional funds with costs of equipment and other items increasing.

In other business, Matthew Ellis with KO Consulting said an Ohio Department of Natural Resources recreational trails $60,000 grant is being sought for trail restoration on the Billy Goat Trail at Woodland Park.

Ellis said the work would include updates to walking trails, and trails for runners.

He said the grants are announced in November.

Ellis said he has also applied for a Polaris Trail grant for $50,000 for historical signage for trails about Woodland Park.

He said another grant being sought is Norfolk Southern grants for $11,000 for additional fire equipment.

Also, Mayor Ray Lewis said he has been attending recent building trades group meetings regarding data centers.

“The data center buzz continues, so I have attended meetings to be as informed, as educated as I can about data centers if one were to ever come to set up shop in the village,” Lewis said.

He said no data centers are coming to the village.

Lewis said he also wanted to be educated on what labor and building trades would be involved with such a project or any other project.

Councilman John Metzinger said council will look at having some type of data center legislation on the books in the future.

In other business, council:

• Heard from Police Chief Ryan Ronghi that many communities use the Flock Camera System. Vehicles wanted in criminal investigations can be identified and that information is passed to the appropriate agencies.

• Heard from Councilwoman Kerry Reckard that the police department remodeling project begins in May.

• Heard from Metzinger that Lindy Paving will resurface Second Street from Ohio Avenue to McDonald Avenue this summer.

• Are placing an older ambulance out for bids.
