TCTC OKs $1.9M roof project

CHAMPION — The Trumbull Career and Technical Center Board of Education has approved a $1.9 million roof replacement project on the adult education section of the school and a part of the high school.

The board on Thursday approved an agreement with Garland/DBS for the replacement project to be done this summer.

Jerry Gorgie, supervisor of facilities and transportation at TCTC, said that in 2019 most of the high school roof was replaced with the next section the adult education area and part of the high school known as the D Wing, which houses technology and industry classes, was not done previously.

Gorgie said the two sections will be around 50,000 square feet of roof, and when completed 60% of the center’s entire roof will have been replaced.

He said that in 2027 another remaining section of the high school roof which are C and E wings will be replaced.

Board member Patricia Limperos of Warren said the facilities committee, of which she is chairwoman, met with Gorgie who discussed different projects that have been done or will be done.

Limperos said the 47-year-old high school cafeteria floor was replaced, a fence placed at the recycling center made possible with a grant, and continued work on the Technology, Career Exploration and Resource Center, which began last May at the southeastern corner of the building.

Superintendent Jason Gray said that addition will have a health/wellness area in partnership with Cadence Care.

He said that section is scheduled to be open in the 2026-27 year and serve as a hub for workforce development, mental health support, and student success services.

ENROLLMENT

In other business, Melissa Starkey, special needs supervisor, said there were 774 student applicants for the 2026-27 year with Niles, Warren, Howland, Lakeview and Champion having the most applicants.

Starkey said 17 of the 27 programs offered at the school that have already filled up with a maximum of 25 students per program are cosmetology, electrical, welding, education/family services, auto service and construction technology.

She said many other programs are getting near maximum capacity.

Starkey said some programs which have two instructors and allow for more than 25 students include cosmetology, culinary, education/family service, and pre-nursing.

Starkey said while there are programs that may be more male student-dominated or female student-dominated, efforts are to get students of both sexes in nontraditional programs.

She said female-dominated programs are cosmetology, nursing, education/family service, animal science and dental assisting.

Gray said when he started at TCTC the programs never closed as quickly as they have in recent years as more students attend the career center.

Starkey said students who attend TCTC are still able to take part in extracurricular sports and after-school club events at their home schools, including band.

Also, student officers of Skills USA spoke to the board, and that regional competition took place recently at the Cuyahoga County Career Technical Center and 64 students from the career center are advancing to the state level May 5 and 6 at the Columbus Community Center.

If successful at state, students advance to national competition in Atlanta, Georgia.

Skills USA is holding a canned food drive at the center through April 24.

In other action, the board approved an agreement with the Ohio Schools Council regarding an electric purchasing program.

Treasurer Cody Holeko said the Ohio Schools Council on behalf of TCTC and other school districts will be able to secure bids at lower rates for electricity on behalf of many districts.

“They are able to get lower rates when there are more schools that will benefit,” Holecko said.

Starting at $3.23/week.
