Grand jury refuses to indict girlfriend of man convicted in near fatal stabbing
WARREN — A Trumbull County grand jury has refused to indict Zulekha M. Berry, 46, of Warren, on any charges in connection to the Nov. 5 near fatal stabbing of a man in front of a restaurant on U.S. Route 422 in Niles.
Charges of attempted murder and complicity in the commission of an offense were bound over to a Trumbull County grand jury early last month, but the grand jury did not indict her on the charges.
Berry, who is also known as Zulekha Williamson, was described in testimony in the attempted murder trial of Kenyon D. Kellum, 52, as being with Kellum at the time of the stabbing and handing Kellum the knife that Kellum eventually used to stab a 37-year-old man.
A jury found Kellum guilty of felonious assault, but not attempted muder, following a trial in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court. Kellum was sentenced March 10 to eight to 12 years in prison. A cellphone video showed Kellum and the victim engaging in hand gestures, postures and movements and Berry handing Kellum a knife, which Kellum eventually swung violently downward into the victim’s left shoulder/neck area.
The victim, who is originally from the Pittsburgh area, suffered serious injuries to his heart, causing him to go into cardiac arrest. A doctor brought him back to life, but he suffered brain damage and has lost the ability to communicate.
Kellum is originally from the Warren area, but testified that he was back home visiting for a couple of months at the time of the confrontation with the man.
