Youngstown woman arrested on domestic violence charge
LIBERTY — A Youngstown woman is out on bail after being arrested during a Friday morning disturbance.
Tahira Dothard, 23, pleaded not guilty to a charge of domestic violence in Girard Municipal Court.
According to a police report, officers were informed by Trumbull County 911 of a disturbance at a Logan Gate Road residence, adding that a man was screaming that a woman was chasing him with a knife and asking neighbors to call police.
Officers searched the building’s second floor hallway upon arrival to find the pair, with residents reiterating the chase, not knowing at which apartment it was happening.
Officers checked one of the apartments to find a woman, later identified as Dothard, leaving it, who confirmed she was in an altercation with a man.
The woman told officers that she and her boyfriend were drinking alcohol and got into a verbal argument after visiting a bar over an ex-boyfriend who was there, according to the report.
Officers noted a small mark on her nose, responding that “he was hitting me,” adding that her boyfriend said she had a knife, but she did not and he must have believed it because of her coat.
The report states Dothard said they were “wrestling” in the apartment and it spilled into the hallway. Dothard told officers that she became agitated after her boyfriend said he was “messing around with another girl.”
The boyfriend, who had returned to the apartment after denying knowing anything about a disturbance previously to officers, said the cut on his right middle finger was from Dothard cutting him with a kitchen knife while they fought in the bathroom.
The boyfriend told officers that he did not strike Dothard and instead grabbed her by the coat and pushed her into the bathtub to give him more time to run out of the apartment and grab her cellphone, according to the report.
The boyfriend alleged Dothard began chasing him down the hallway with the knife and yelled for the neighbors to call police, maintaining her story that the fight started at the bar after she slapped her ex-boyfriend.
When officers asked how her boyfriend received the cut, Dothard told officers “he did it to himself,” explaining that he might have done it while wrestling in a closet. Officers did not find any traces of blood there, however, according to the report.
The report states Dothard told officers that because she is a woman, her boyfriend should have let her “beat up on him,” adding that he “broke her heart,” which is why she started hitting him.
Officers could not find the knife used to cut her boyfriend, the report states.
Dothard was released on a $5,000 bond set during her arraignment and is set to appear back in court on March 4, court records show.
