Two arraigned in death of Valley teen

WARREN — Two men were arraigned in the shooting death of a 16-year-old boy earlier this month on Mahoning Avenue in Warren.

Ashaud Johnson and Willis Smith IV, both 18, were indicted by a Trumbull County grand jury Feb. 18 in the shooting death of 16-year-old Da’Mar McKinney of Youngstown.

Smith is charged with aggravated murder with a firearm specification and tampering with evidence. Johnson is charged with aggravated murder with a firearm specification and two counts of tampering with evidence.

Smith pleaded not guilty to his charges Monday before Trumbull County Common Pleas Court Judge Cynthia Rice. He is being held without bond at the Trumbull County jail. He is due back in court March 11, court records show.

Johnson pleaded not guilty Tuesday to his charges before Trumbull County Common Pleas Judge Sarah Kovoor. He also is being held without bond and is due back in court March 17.

McKinney was found Feb. 11 outside an apartment complex off Mahoning Avenue with a gunshot wound. He was taken by ambulance to the hospital, but died the next day.

It was the second homicide of the year in Warren.
