WHAT: City council meeting Monday

PRESENT: Reynald Paolone, John Moliterno, Lily Martuccio, Tod Latell, Wes Steiner, Thomas Grumley, James Clark and Mayor Mark Zuppo

ABSENT: Keith Schubert

Council:

• Heard from Safety Service Director Mark Ragozine about seeking an H20 Ohio Environmental $70,000 grant for washing stations for street department vehicles to remove salt and debris from underneath. He said there is no local match.

• Heard from Zuppo the city is waiting for architectural designs for the Wellman Theater as plans are to move forward with roof repairs and some demolition work on the alleyway by the theater.

• Heard from fire Chief James Petruzzi that the ambulance service that restarted last summer is self-sufficient with revenue per transport at $400. He said he is working with Auditor Julie Coggins to get a total for the first six months.

• Heard from Latell of a Kids Dental clinic opening the fourth quarter of the year at the former Rite Aid building off U.S. Route 422.

• Gave second reading to enter into a contract with MS Consultants Inc. of Youngstown for engineering services at $105,000 for 2026 and 2027.

• Approved advertising for bids for repairing or replacing a section of the city hall roof that has been leaking.

• Set a finance meeting for 6:30 p.m. Feb. 23 in council chambers, zoning meeting at 5 p.m. Feb. 19 at Girard Free Library followed by a blockwatch at 6 p.m., also at the library, and streets and sidewalks 11 a.m. March 10 at the mayor’s office meeting room.

WHAT: Board of education meeting Monday

PRESENT: Russell Sewell, Tim Gibson, Karen Ancell, Bradley Gamlin and Julia Shutt

The board:

• Recorded the board meeting for the first time and will post it on the school district’s YouTube site. Superintendent Anthony Calderone said meetings will be video recorded, but not live, and then placed on the site for public viewing to make sure there are no technical issues.

• Approved the 2026-27 school calendar with the first day for students Aug. 31 and last day June 3, 2027.

• Approved senior band members’ trip to Kalahari water park in Sandusky on March 1 and 2.

• Approved the purchase of a nine-passenger van from Klaben Ford of Warren at $67,586.

• Approved participation in the Ohio School Boards Association Legal Assistance Plan to obtain favorable judicial decisions for school districts at $250.

• Approved the voluntary transfer of Olivia Bosley, classified employee, from high school secretary to middle school secretary.

• Set a special meeting Feb. 25 for re-employment of Calderone as school superintendent.

• Heard from Calderone that the band shell will be addressed when the weather gets warmer and different items for the project are finished.

• Announced the band boosters will host a spaghetti dinner fundraiser March 18 to benefit the high school band.

• Approved Students Against Drunk Driving winter mentor festivity night 2 to 10 p.m. Feb. 28.

Weathersfield

WHAT: Township trustees meeting Tuesday

PRESENT: Steve Gerberry, Ed Whittaker and Rich Harkins

Trustees:

• Increased the hourly rate for part-time police officers from $18 to $20 per hour in order to attract more candidates.

• Hired Jacob Sigley as a part-time police officer and accepted the resignation of Nathan Novotny as a full-time police officer. He has accepted a position with the Niles Police Department.

• Hired Evan Warholic as a probationary firefighter and Connor Shilling as a junior firefighter.

• Approved Michael Paulus to serve as an alternate on the zoning commission through December 2030 at $25 per meeting.

• Approved use of the township park for the Flag Day festival June 8-14.

• Designated Whittaker as an alternate to the annual meeting of the Trumbull County Combined Health District Advisory Council and delegating vote authority.

• Announced the annual veterans banner program is open with up to 52 banners to be installed on light poles in the township park. Banner orders are being accepted through March 13. Information is available at the township social media site or at the administration offices.

• Were notified by Armstrong Cable of an upcoming rate increase for video service and internet service.

• Recognized probationary firefighter Jordan Stremo for passing the Firefighter 1 training and for passing the firefighter certification.

• Reported the Trumbull Neighborhood Partnership received an Ohio Environmental Protection Agency grant to remediate and remove the abandoned gas station at 3625 Main St. Officials said the project is out for bids.
