Liberty police respond to Belmont Pines twice in 1 day
LIBERTY — Sunday evening was busy for township police as officers were called twice to a local mental health clinic for altercations.
Three male juveniles and at least three female juveniles were arrested by Liberty police on charges not named in a pair of police reports obtained Monday.
According to the first report, officers were called to Belmont Pines after staff reported to dispatchers that male patients were hitting staff and fighting, with dispatchers noting excessive screaming in the background until the line disconnected.
As officers made their way to the boys’ unit, they noted several staff members restraining one boy and officers were able to handcuff him with no issues, with two more being apprehended afterward.
Staff members told officers that one juvenile became agitated and started to tear down the drop ceiling tiles in the unit and threw items, the police report states. He began fighting the staff upon being told to stop and received assistance from the other two boys.
A second report details officers returning to the hospital nearly an hour later — this time receiving reports that patients in the girls’ unit were fighting the staff. With another officer occupied with transporting the juveniles from the previous incident, Girard police were called for assistance.
The report states the officer heard multiple girls screaming at staff from their rooms, with a staff member opening the door and saying it was just one girl and that she was on the floor. She was later handcuffed.
While the officer was obtaining personal information, other patients became upset and began yelling at staff and officers, who escorted the handcuffed girl out to deescalate the situation.
The report states another juvenile girl kicked a hole in the wall and began ripping the drywall down while the officer was waiting in the unit, and the staff asked to pursue charges against her too.
While returning to the police cruiser to get more restraints, staff reported that five more girls were vandalizing the facility, resulting in officers from Hubbard City and Township, Brookfield and the Ohio State Highway Patrol arriving to assist.
However, the officer noted that the girls were only yelling at staff and refusing to go back to their rooms, resulting in only one other juvenile girl being arrested.
