WARREN — A city man accused of August break-ins at the Eastwood Mall and a nearby jewelry store was declared incompetent to stand trial earlier this week.
Joshua Evans, 24, Westwood Drive NW, Warren, was ordered by Trumbull County Common Pleas Judge Ronald Rice to Heartland Forensic Center in Massillon, which will attempt to restore him to competency. A status hearing will take place in July, according to the Trumbull County Prosecutor’s Office.
Evans was indicted in August on three counts of grand theft of a motor vehicle, two counts of grand theft, seven counts of attempted grand theft of a motor vehicle, six counts breaking and entering, theft, two counts of vandalism, six counts possessing criminal tools, failure to comply and two counts of attempted breaking / entering.
Evans was arrested following the incidents that occurred around 3:30 a.m. Aug. 3 at Eastwood Mall and the adjacent Direct Jewelry Outlet store. Niles police responded to alarms at both locations and found that glass doors had been shattered to gain entry.
Officers identified Evans as the suspect within hours, utilizing surveillance footage from the businesses and the city’s FLOCK safety cameras.
