Hubbard mayor hurt in crash in Bahamas

HUBBARD — Mayor Ben Kyle is at a trauma hospital in Miami after a car accident he and other family members were involved in on New Year’s Day while vacationing in the Bahamas, according to family members.

Jan Kyle of Hubbard, mother of Ben Kyle, said Sunday her son will need to have surgery.

“He and his family and another family were vacationing in the Bahamas when they were in an auto accident on New Year’s Day. It happened in the evening on Thursday. They were all in the same car. He had a lot of injuries and will need surgery,” Jan Kyle said.

She said Ben suffered serious injuries, but none of them are life threatening and he is expected to recover.

Kyle said other family members also had injuries. Some received stitches, and one had a broken ankle.

She said her son, who is very tall, was the biggest person in the vehicle and seemed to have suffered the most injuries.

Jan Kyle said she and her family are hopeful Ben will recover well following surgery and appreciates the support they have from family, friends and the community. She expects that after his surgery, Ben will need a lot of care and recovery time.

“We will see how the surgery goes and then see when he can come home,” she said.

City officials are addressing the situation since Kyle is expected to be off for some time

City council is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. today at the municipal building, where a president pro-tem will be chosen to replace Council President Mike Mogg, who will become acting mayor while Kyle is recovering.

Mogg was elected council president in the November election after serving as 3rd Ward councilman.

Mogg said a member of council will need to be named president pro tem in his place before he can become the mayor.

Starting at $3.23/week.
