City woman gets 30 years in child sex case

Husband sentenced last week

WARREN — Shawna Mayfield, 28, of Warren, received the sentence of 30 years to life in prison Wednesday that was called for in the plea agreement she signed recently.

She pleaded guilty to eight counts of child rape, five counts of pandering sexually oriented matter involving a minor, one count of child endangering and one count of sexual conduct with an animal.

Her husband, Justin Mayfield, 37, of Warren, got 40 years to life in prison when he was sentenced a week ago in the same case. He pleaded guilty to seven counts of child rape and one count of disseminating matter harmful to juveniles.

The couple committed the offenses against the same two children over multiple years in the recent past, prosecutors said.

Justin Mayfield didn’t say anything about the crimes at his sentencing. Shawna Mayfield only said, “Just that I admit my wrongdoings, and there’s nothing I can do to change that, but this is not who I am.”

When it was time for Sharay Lewis of the Ohio Public Defender’s Office, an attorney for Shawna Mayfield, to offer remarks on Shawna Mayfield’s behalf, Lewis only asked that Trumbull County Common Pleas Court Judge Cynthia Westcott Rice follow the joint recommendation from prosecutors and the defense of 30 years to life. She mentioned that she filed a sentencing memorandum.

Westcott Rice acknowledged that she received and read a copy of Lewis’ sentencing memorandum and approved it being filed under seal, meaning not open to the public.

Trumbull County Assistant Prosecutor Gabe Wildman said Shawna Mayfield “did take some responsibility for her actions.” And he noted that Shawna Mayfield also signed a “proffer” that promised she would testify to certain facts about the case in the event that her husband went to trial.

Wildman said Shawna Mayfield’s cooperation with prosecutors and other issues were “all taken into account in that 30-years-to-life recommendation.”

The judge made Shawna Mayfield aware of various aspects of her sentence, such as her requirement to register her address every 90 days for the rest of her life as a tier-3 sex offender when she leaves prison.

Westcott Rice also made Shawna Mayfield aware that she will not oppose the defendant being granted early release, saying she must “serve all of your minimum term before being eligible for release.”

Wildman said after Justin Mayfield’s sentencing that Justin and Shawna Mayfield “engaged in various sex acts with a minor female victim.” Wildman also said Justin Mayfield engaged in, “along with his co-defendant, Shawna Mayfield, his wife, sex acts with a minor male victim.”

Wildman also noted earlier that Shawna Mayfield pleaded guilty to more rape counts than her husband, but she got a recommendation for less prison time “because of the evidence in the case.”

Wildman explained that Shawna Mayfield’s phone had text messages showing that Justin Mayfield was “clearly the primary driver of this. He was clearly the one the ideas originated with.” Wildman noted that Shawna Mayfield “at some point tried to stop it.” And Justin Mayfield had a criminal record, including a crime that involved minors, Wildman said. Shawna Mayfield had no apparent prior criminal record.

Wildman said earlier that he hoped the agreed-upon sentences will make it so “neither one of them hopefully can ever get out and hurt a child again.”
