Bazetta, police ink 3-year pact

Bazetta Township police have a new contract.

The board of trustees approved the new three-year contract this week with the seven-member union of the Fraternal Order of Police. Officers will receive pay increases of 4.5% in the first year of the contract and 4% in years two and three.

“It works out well for all of us,” Trustee Michael Hovis said.

The trustees also approved purchases totaling $24,900 to outfit the new township police cruiser. A cruiser was purchased in December to replace one totaled after a police officer struck a deer. The cruiser cost about $48,000.

Also Tuesday, trustees:

• Started a new policy for public comment. Members of the public will have the ability to give comments before each section of the agenda, in addition to the end of the meeting.

• Accepted, with thanks, a donation of $2,760 to the fire department from the Anthony Grayson Memorial. The money was used to purchase a gas detector for the fire department’s use.

• Reduced the current Zone Change Public Hearing fee of $1,200 to $800 and Zoning Board of Appeals Hearing fees from $800 to $600. Trustees no longer have to pay for legal advertisements for these hearings in local newspapers. Notices will be posted on the township website and will be mailed to impacted residents.

• Set a park cleanup date for 9 a.m. March 7. Paint was also purchased at a cost of $1,000 to paint the park gazebo, shelters, restroom building, maintenance building and picnic tables. Volunteers will do the work.

Starting at $3.23/week.
