Youngstown man appears on domestic violence charge

LIBERTY — A Youngstown man accused of hitting a woman and fleeing officers made an appearance in court Tuesday morning.

Amarion Croff, 22, pleaded not guilty to charges of domestic violence, resisting arrest and obstructing official business in Girard Municipal Court.

According to a police report, an officer working traffic detail around Cardinal and Mansell drives was notified by Area Wide Protection employees of a fight near the intersection of Cardinal Drive and Trumbull Avenue.

The report states the officer observed a man, later identified as Croff, standing in the driver’s side door frame of a red Chevrolet Impala, repeatedly punching a woman in the driver’s seat, and as the officer approached their location, Croff walked away toward the door of a Cardinal Drive residence.

The woman got out of the vehicle, telling the officer that Croff was hitting her, according to the report.

The officer ordered Croff to come over to him, but Croff failed to comply with his order, despite the officer being in full uniform.

The report states Croff began running on foot southbound from the porch and reached into his waistband area, heading eastbound toward Fifth Avenue, but eventually lost his balance as he ran through two front yards.

The officer eventually used his stun weapon on Croff as he attempted to run again, temporarily incapacitating him, according to the report.

The officer spoke with Croff after taking him into custody. Croff told him that there wasn’t any physical fight between him and the woman, adding that they hadn’t put their hands on each other. However, a verbal argument started when Croff asked the woman to grab his headphones from the passenger seat, he said.

The report states Croff said he didn’t hear the officer’s commands because he had headphones in his ears, only really seeing the officer’s vehicle pull up when a car started honking its horn.

Croff told the officer that he began running because he was going into the house, didn’t think he was in trouble and didn’t hear the officer’s commands to stop, the report states.

Croff was transported to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital per his request, after requesting the Liberty Fire Department return to the scene after claiming to feel lightheaded.

The report states the officer went back to the AWP employees who reported the incident, telling the officer they heard yelling from the vehicle, and by the time they reached the officer, Croff was on top of the woman, ramming and “hitting her hard,” demonstrating a punching motion with both hands.

The officer went to St. Elizabeth’s and informed Croff of his charges and mandatory court appearance. Croff was still being held at the Trumbull County jail on a $7,500 bond as of Tuesday evening.

He is set to appear in court for a pre-trial hearing Dec. 24, court records show.

Starting at $3.23/week.
