Warren man indicted on attempted murder in Niles stabbing

WARREN — Kenyon D. Kellum, 52, of Southern Boulevard Northwest was indicted Wednesday on attempted murder with a repeat violent offender specification and two counts, felonious assault with repeat violent offender specifications in a Nov. 5 stabbing in the parking lot of the Gentry Plaza in Niles.

If he were to be convicted of the attempted murder and the felonious assaults, he could get more than 30 years in prison. He is in the Trumbull County jail.

Kellum was arrested Nov. 5 after the incident at the plaza near the intersection of U.S. Route 422 and state Route 46. Niles Prosecutor Phillip Zuzulo cited eyewitness accounts and surveillance footage in stating that Kellum had multiple opportunities to de-escalate and walk away before resorting to deadly force.

Zuzulo said that a witness reported that the victim spotted Kellum and a woman exiting a nearby restaurant and began accosting them.

Video evidence showed the woman handing Kellum a knife during the argument. The footage captured Kellum stabbing the victim in the upper left side of his body — in the chest and neck area –with a downward trajectory, a report states. The altercation continued after the stabbing, and then Kellum and the woman left, heading east on Youngstown Warren Road to a nearby Days Inn motel, Zuzolo said.

Using the city’s Flock license plate camera system, officers tracked the suspects to a room at the Days Inn. Motel management confirmed a couple matching the descriptions was there.

The victim was found unresponsive on the west side of the plaza near Morgan Furniture around 3 p.m. Nov. 5. The Niles Fire Department and its emergency services personnel treated him at the scene before he was rushed to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, where he underwent surgery for stab wounds to the neck and chest, police said.
