Warren man accused of hit-skip death of former educator indicted
WARREN — A 63-year-old Warren man accused in a fatal hit-and-run that killed a retired teacher was indicted Thursday on multiple charges, a Trumbull County grand jury report shows.
Wayne S. Keeley, of Hickory Lane SW, faces counts of aggravated vehicular homicide and failure to stop after an accident, both third-degree felonies, along with vehicular manslaughter, a second-degree misdemeanor. He is scheduled to appear for arraignment Nov. 19 at 9 a.m. before Trumbull County Common Pleas Judge Sean O’Brien.
Keeley pleaded not guilty during an earlier arraignment in Niles Municipal Court, where Judge Christopher Shaker set his bond at $1 million, citing the severity of the charges and the need to protect the public. Keeley, represented by a public defender, highlighted Keeley’s lack of prior criminal history and community ties. However, he remains in custody at the Trumbull County jail.
The charges stem from a Saturday evening crash in Niles, where police say Keeley veered off the road in his black Ford F-150 King Ranch, struck a shed and a parked vehicle, then hit 67-year-old Brenda Hibbard as she investigated the noise. Hibbard, a resident of the neighborhood near Fifth Street and Indiana Avenue, was found unresponsive in a yard and died overnight from her injuries.
Keeley allegedly fled the scene but was apprehended after a resident’s tip led police to his truck in the Niles Park Plaza parking lot. According to police, Keeley cooperated with detectives, saying he fell asleep while driving home from work and panicked after the crash.
Hibbard, a retired second grade teacher from the Newton Falls Exempted Village School District, was remembered by Superintendent Andreas Johansson as a dedicated educator who “touched and shaped the lives of thousands of children, fostering curiosity, confidence and a lifelong love of learning.” Johansson added that her kindness and influence on the community would be “forever remembered and cherished.”
