YPD: Hospital shooting was suicide

YOUNGSTOWN — The shooting incident that occurred Thursday morning in the emergency room at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital was a suicide, according to a news release from Youngstown police Capt. Jason Simon.

The release states that a man, 33, disarmed a Mercy Health police officer who was doing a routine check of the emergency room and immediately turned the gun on himself. The incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. in a restricted area of the ER.

“Despite receiving immediate medical attention, the individual died as a result of his self-inflicted wound,” the release states.

The suicide is still under investigation by the Youngstown Police Department, which is taking the lead on how the hospital officer was disarmed, as well as the Mahoning County coroner’s office.
