Mercer county man faces $100K bond after explosives found during stop
NILES — A Mercer County, Pa., man is being held in the Trumbull County jail on a $100,000 bond after Niles police discovered guns, ammunition and homemade explosives in his vehicle during a traffic stop early Thursday morning.
The arrest led to an investigation at the Eastwood Mall Complex, where a second vehicle was inspected but found to contain no explosives.
Joe Bell, director of communications for the Eastwood Mall Complex, said Niles police coordinated with Howland Township police, and an inspection was done on the second vehicle. No explosives were found, Bell said.
“We’re just very happy that the Niles and Howland police departments cooperate well and are very vigilant,” Bell said. “They do a great job of serving our shopping center. They’re on top of what happens, and we can’t thank them enough.”
John Joseph Podleyon, 46, of Mercer, was arraigned on five counts of unlawful possession of dangerous ordnance, a fourth-degree felony, and one count of carrying a concealed weapon, a first-degree misdemeanor. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Monday.
Niles police stopped Podleyon in a parking lot near downtown Niles, where they found the illegal items in his vehicle.
Podleyon informed officers of a second vehicle located in the Eastwood Mall Complex parking lot, directly in front of Burlington Coat Factory.
