Youngstown man set to appear on DUI charge
LIBERTY — A Youngstown man facing vehicle-related charges stemming from a Saturday traffic stop is set to make an appearance in court today.
Arley Gomez, 34, is facing charges of OVI, no operator license, lanes of travel and a criminal summons for open container in a motor vehicle in Girard Municipal Court.
According to the report, an officer traveling eastbound on Gypsy Lane noticed a dark Dodge Ram traveling in the opposite direction, veering left of the road and nearly hitting his cruiser. While the driver corrected himself, the officer continued to watch him in the rearview mirror, seeing him veer left once again and drive in the middle lane of the two-lane road.
Upon turning around and pulling the vehicle over in the Goodwill parking lot, the officer made contact with the driver, identified as Gomez, and immediately noticed two open beer containers in the center cup holder compartments.
The report states the officer began speaking with Gomez, who told him he did not speak English and began speaking in Spanish. Throughout that interaction, the officer reported a strong alcoholic odor from Gomez’s breath, as well as his eyes being bloodshot red and glassy.
As soon as Gomez left the vehicle, the officer noticed he was unstable on his feet. When asked if he had a driver’s license via Google Translate, he shook his head “no.”
A second officer was called to translate, and Gomez told the officer that he had just dropped off his friends, also admitting that he had five beers. He also told the translating officer that he was from Mexico and did not have any papers, the report states.
Gomez rejected the translating officer’s offer for a field sobriety test, telling them that he didn’t do anything wrong, according to the report.
ICE was also contacted about Gomez, with the officer reporting that they will be looking into him.
Officers did an inventory of Gomez’s truck, and they observed multiple Michelob Ultras throughout the vehicle, noting two to be “cold to the touch”, according to the report, resulting in his open container charge.
Gomez was booked into the Trumbull County jail on his charges, but was released the next day.
