Release denied for man convicted in murder and dismemberment case

Staff report

WARREN — The Ohio Parole Board has denied release for a 72-year-old inmate convicted of murdering and dismembering his friend in 1994.

According to a news release from the Trumbull County Prosecutor’s Office, Roy G. Green, 73, who is incarcerated at Allen Correctional Institution, appeared before a parole board panel April 1, but was denied release. His next hearing is set for February 2030, extending his case another five years.

Green is serving an 18-years-to-life sentence for the shotgun killing of Devin Griffin in Warren on Dec. 23, 1994. He was also convicted of abuse of a corpse and receiving stolen property.

Prosecutors said Green used a shotgun, ax and knife to kill Griffin before dismembering his body. Trumbull County Prosecutor Dennis Watkins, who handled the case, described Green as “sane crazy,” saying his actions were calculated despite their brutality.

“Green may be the record holder for the number of body parts,” Watkins said, expressing approval of the parole board’s decision.

Key evidence in the case included testimony from Green’s son, who helped dispose of Griffin’s remains in trash bags dumped in a wooded area and shallow pond during the 1994 Christmas holidays. Family members, including his son, have opposed Green’s release, citing fears for their safety.

In a March 31 letter to the board, prosecutors argued against parole, calling Green’s crimes “sheer brutality and inhumanity.”
