Kinsman reviewing options on police cruiser garage
KINSMAN — Township officials are reviewing whether to keep three police cruisers in the building at the intersection of state Routes 5 and 7 or convert the back room of the fire department into a three-vehicle garage.
Trustee Bruce Bancroft said at Monday’s trustees meeting that he and Trustee Chairman Jamin Banning will attend a meeting of the Friends of Kinsman today who have given $30,000 for the project. The friends group hosted fundraisers and received donations.
Banning said he will see if the friends group would support the idea of renovating the back of the fire building and get their input on what they would recommend.
Officials said even renovating the back of the fire building may be too expensive, with an estimate of $300,000. Bancroft said the township pays $400 rent per month to house the cruisers at the current building.
“For years we have been talking about the need for a new police garage. Right now we are looking at options and everything we can and also what costs would be involved,” he said.
Bancroft said the back room at the fire building is rented out for graduation parties and for bingo.
He said building a new structure by the township administration building was discussed but would be too expensive.
“It was too expensive for us to build a new building at over $400,000. We tried to get ARP funds but couldn’t get them” Bancroft said,
In another matter, the township received a $2,800 grant for additional security cameras for the recycling area by the township garage.
Trustee Greg Leonhard said the new cameras are more technically advanced to get vehicles and license plate images from all angles.
Leonhard said previously that people were pulling in by the bins and with no front license plates, the current cameras could not get an image.
The four new cameras will be added to the four cameras already at the site but in different locations.
In other business, trustees:
• Heard concerns from residents who live east of the center square where there has been flooding of yards from the overflowing nearby creek. Bancroft said there may be little trustees can do.
• Set spring cleanup for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the township garage rain or shine with no paint, motor oil or fluids accepted.
• Announced Friends of Kinsman basket raffle 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 24 at the American Legion hall, Safety Forces Day June 28 at the park, Kinsman sale days for garage and lawn sales July 11 to 13, and the Masonic Lodge car show July 20 at the former Badger Local Schools property.
