HOWLAND -- Another Trumbull County school was recognized Wednesday for its commitment to serving military-connected families, according to a news release.
The Ohio Department of Education and Workforce (DEW) recognized Howland High School with the Purple Star designation for the first time.
The designation is awarded to schools that meet criteria set by the Purple Star Advisory Board, such as having a staff point-of-contact for military students and families to serve as a primary liaison between them and the school, according to the DEW's website. The liaison is also expected to complete the DEW's "Military Children in Ohio's Schools" course and provide proof of "continuing professional development" through a program that increases military cultural awareness.
Additionally, the school must complete one additional activity to be recognized, like a military recognition event outside of Veterans Day, having processes in place to identify students with military connections or celebrating the Month of the Military Child.
Sean Borawiec, the school's student services specialist and career-based intervention coordinator, explained the pride the school has in fostering awareness, naming some of its military-based programs.
"Through programs like STAR, modeled after Junior ROTC, we help students develop citizenship, leadership and a commitment to service," Borawiec said. "We also administer the ASVAB to sophomores and guide them in understanding their results, empowering them to make informed decisions about their futures."
"Our goal is to build a school culture that honors our military-connected community," he added.
Howland High School wasn't the only school to receive the honor, however.
Newton Falls Exempted Village Schools' elementary and middle school, and Brookfield High School, also joined them as first-time recipients.
The Purple Star designation is valid for three years, and the schools will be eligible to apply for renewal in the fall of 2027.
