Bond set at $1 million for city man accused of kidnapping and rape

WARREN — A 64-year-old Warren man pleaded not guilty Tuesday to first-degree felony charges of rape and kidnapping after an alleged violent assault in Champion Township earlier this year.

John G. Baker was arraigned before Trumbull County Common Pleas Judge Sarah Kovoor Thomas, who set bond at $1 million. A pretrial hearing is scheduled for April 29.

According to a Champion Police Department report, officers responded to a Summerdale Avenue residence on Feb. 20 after a woman reported she was assaulted. The victim told investigators she met the man weeks earlier at a grocery store and invited him to her home that day.

After spending time together, she went to bed, only for the man to enter her room, become aggressive, and sexually assault her, the report states. The woman escaped to a bathroom, locking herself inside while calling for help.

While she was on the phone, the man allegedly stabbed the bathroom door 11 times, with three punctures penetrating through, before officers arrived. Police found a fixed-blade knife with a bent tip on the bed and fresh slash marks on a bedroom wall.

Police located the man hiding nude in the bedroom. Officers reported he was combative, slurred his speech, and smelled strongly of alcohol as he dressed.

He allegedly threatened officers, saying, “I am going to get you,” and vowed to return with matches, according to the report. Baker remains in custody at the Trumbull County jail. If convicted, he faces a potential life sentence.

Starting at $2.99/week.
