39 indictments handed down by grand jury
WARREN — A Warren man was among more than three dozen people indicted Wednesday by a grand jury, and is facing multiple felony charges after police say he sexually assaulted a woman and attacked a bathroom door with a knife while she hid inside.
John G. Baker, 64, of Paige Avenue, will answer to charges of rape, kidnapping and felonious assault during his arraignment before Trumbull County Common Pleas Judge Sarah Thomas Kovoor next week.
Baker remains in the Trumbull County jail on a $1 million bond and also was issued a no-contact order by a Warren Municipal Court judge when he was first arrested.
According to a Champion police report, officers responded to a residence on Summerdale Avenue on Feb. 20 2024, after the victim contacted a family member stating she was being assaulted. Upon arrival, officers found the house dark and initially saw no signs of disturbance.
The victim told police she met the suspect weeks earlier at a local grocery store.
The woman said she invited the man to her home that day, where they spent time together before she went to bed. Shortly after, she said, he entered her bedroom and became aggressive, forcing himself on her. She managed to escape to a bathroom, locking herself inside while calling for help, the report stated.
While she was on the phone, the suspect stabbed the bathroom door 11 times, with three punctures going completely through, the report stated. Officers later found a fixed-blade knife with a bent tip on the bed and observed fresh slash marks on a bedroom wall.
Police located the suspect hiding nude in the bedroom. After being ordered to dress, he became combative, slurring his speech and emitting a strong odor of alcohol, according to the report. He allegedly told officers, “I am going to get you,” and threatened to return with matches.
Police noted the suspect had an active warrant from another jurisdiction and a prior arrest history involving violent offenses.
