BAZETTA -- The Warren Harley Owners Group (H.O.G.) 3906 hosted a chili cook-off Saturday at Warren Harley-Davidson where 100 chili taste-testers helped raise funds to benefit Trumbull Mobile Meals.
"We have been doing this for over 10 years. We have always been hosted by Warren Harley-Davidson. We got a great turnout this year," Greg Brown of H.O.G. said.
Twenty crockpots holding one of three different varieties of chili were placed on a series of tables covered in orange and black tablecloths. Those are the Harley-Davidson colors.
Anyone was welcome to enter chili into the event. Guests tasted any of the varieties they wished for a $5 donation.
Chili categories included traditional, spicy and white. Awards were given for the best chili in each of those categories. Three staff members of Trumbull Mobile Meals, Deb Reel, Tom Walker and Wilbert Collins, all of Warren, were the judges.
Guests were able to cast a ballot for their favorite chili and the cook of that winning chili was awarded the People's Choice Award.
"If someone comes in a little late with a pot of chili, we are not going to turn them away. Making chili can get expensive these days," Brown said.
H.O.G. activity director Gail Cooke said, "Members advertise the event using flyers, and we ask all members to put up one flyer in a restaurant, bar or store. We also use social media and word of mouth".
Trumbull Mobile Meals delivers warm nutritious meals to seniors. The fundraiser's mission is meant to help Trumbull Mobile Meals fulfill its mission of helping seniors live independently in their own homes.
Trumbull Mobile Meals will host an all-day Golf Outing on June 20 at Riverview Golf Course in Newton Falls. It is still in the planning stages, but information will be available on their Facebook page.
H.O.G. has 98 members. At least one is from Greenville, Pa., and others are from Trumbull, Mahoning and Geauga counties.
H.O.G. hosts events for other causes as well. In the fall, a macaroni and cheese cook-off will be at Warren Harley-Davidson. Information will be available on their Facebook page.
Cooke said, "Our main goal is to ride. That is what our chapter was formed to do. Members of this group have a generous spirit and loving heart. We are always looking for new members."
Members meet at 11 a.m. on the third Sunday of every month at Longboyz Tavern in Champion, which is part of the Champion Bowling Alley, 200 Cleveland Ave. West. The April meeting will be on the second Sunday because of Easter.
