City bakery cools ovens after century
Warren Baking Co. bakes last loaf
WARREN — A neighborhood bakery whose aroma and customer base extended beyond its Youngstown Road facility is closing after more than 100 years.
Owner Patty Abbey said the Warren Baking Company’s last day was Tuesday.
In a social media post, Abbey said, “I come to you with a full heart of memories and special moments that we, the Iacozili family, have shared with you over these last 102 years.”
“We are sorry for the short notice, but we can’t begin to express our gratitude for all of you. It truly … has been a pleasure to serve your family for generations.”
No additional details were provided on the closure. A message was left requesting comment.
Customers and business clients praised Warren Baking Company’s quality and longevity. “Dominic’s Italian Bread” was a common thread.
“I’ve had their bread my entire life as many, many others in Warren, Ohio,” restaurant owner Mark Canzonetta wrote. “Sad day.”
“I’d love to see someone take that over. I wish I had the time.”
Canzonetta, who owns Casa di Canzonetta in Youngstown and Wahaka Taco in Howland, recalled in his social media post about the “comforting presence of a fresh loaf of ‘Dominic’s’ …
“I can vividly recall my father, Fred, returning home with a warm loaf almost every day, often with one of ‘the heels’ mysteriously missing! Those simple moments defined our shared meals and the love we found in each slice.”
Warren Councilwoman Tiffany Stanford, D-5th Ward, noted the times her husband would pick up doughnuts and when she would take the bakery’s cookies to city council meetings.
Like Canzonetta, Stanford wants the bakery running agaain.
“I’d love to reach out to them because they have been in Warren for so long,” she said. “They’re such a staple.”
