Annexation and abandoned property top Middlefield agenda

MIDDLEFIELD TOWNSHIP — Village councilman Scott Klein attended this week’s township meeting to get an update on the abandoned property on Kinsman Road and provide an update on the annexation of property from the township to the village.

Trustees in June passed a resolution to proceed with the demolition of a vacant house at 16216 Kinsman Road after no action has been taken by the owner.

Trustees in May voted to give the owner an extra 30 days to clean up or sell the abandoned property. A registered letter was sent and signed for April 19 and trustee Paul Porter spoke to the property owner’s husband, who confirmed his intent to sell the property.

Porter said at least two buyers have expressed an interest in the property, but without a response from the owner, trustees said their hands are tied.

Klein expressed appreciation for the township’s efforts.

“We’ve had conversations with the property owners and they did put it up for sale, and we were very hopeful there would be some kind of purchase and new owners that would solve the problem, but that hasn’t happened yet,” Porter said.

He added that the snow and cold will slow things down, but he is not letting the issue go.

“I did email the prosecutor again today and I heard from her, and we will need another letter from the building department. She doesn’t want that to be more than 90 days old, and we’ll revisit in May. One of the problems we’re having is they just won’t respond to any emails or phone calls,” Porter said.

Also discussed was the recent annexation of 64 acres of property at the intersection of Newcomb and Lake roads from the township into the village for a housing complex. The project developer wants village water and sewer.

Trustees passed the annexation agreement and signed the approval letter, which Klein took with him to village officials for their records.

Trustee Merv Miller asked about the village’s water supply. Klein assured him the supply is adequate to support the new development.

“Eventually, we will need a new water tower,” Klein said.

Starting at $2.99/week.
